This is a workshop for photographers who want more than f-stops and Photoshop tricks, this is about the art of photography, about seeing. We’re going to start out by discussing some of the best images from photographers I admire, helping you appreciate all that goes into such images. From there we move on to what you can apply from that experience into making your own images. I feel strongly that we can learn from good images whether or not we even like them.
We’re going to spend time talking about composition - there will be no rule of thirds here - we’re going to get to the crux of composition, “the strongest way of seeing” to quote Edward Weston. We’ll talk about what you can do with camera position and framing to make better images. We’ll take what we have discussed out into the street to convert theory into practice. The instructors will be peering through your viewfinders and making alternate suggestions so you can compare afterwards.

I’m going to bring a goodly selection of my prints so you will have a chance to evaluate my work and whether it has anything to show you. We’ll get a chance on Saturday evening to sit around and talk about the fine image. You’ll get a chance to talk about your struggles and ask about ours and how we solved problems you might be having.

Uwe and Bettina are going to try and free me from my tripod (It ain’t going to be easy, but they swear they are up to the challenge). They’ll be showing some of their ‘walk around’ portfolio images from San Francisco, both giving you an idea of what can be done while having a lot of fun, and stimulating you to start your own walk-about projects.

Although this is not one of Uwe’s HDR workshops, you will get to see the end result of his work in previously thought impossible lighting and what his efforts with grunging can achieve.

Bettina is more the artist of the pair with many years photographic experience and while not formally lecturing during the workshop, she’s going to bring her eye for beauty to the workshop and help you with your vision.

Brad is a passionate professional photography instructor, has managed lots of workshops, is our host, and provides our first class workshop facilities.
Bettina and Uwe work together on photography for over 30 years, Uwe has taught a number of workshops and guides thousands with his advice on digital photography on OutbackPhoto.com.
Our goals for the workshop are that in the future:
- you might get more out of fine images and be able to use some of the ideas to improve your photographs
- compose both more creatively and strongly
- learn to see what you have been missing as possible subject matter
- have a really good time, some laughs, take some verbal jabs at your instructors and look some nice images.
- go home feeling excited about your photography.
Tall order? Yes, but I think we can make some real progress in these areas over our two days together. Uwe has taught a number of workshops and guides thousands with his advice on digital photography on OutbackPhoto. I have been sharing what I have learned of photography for more than 30 years. Brad is really the pro amongst us, both as a photographer and instructor and will be keeping the other instructors on our collective toes and helping you over rough spots.
We think you will have a good time, enjoy the company of fellow photographers, and if you put in a bit of effort; improve your image making.
Looking forward to seeing you in San Francisco.
