4/26/2005 OpenRAW.org Press Release

Digital Outback Photo has been promoting RAW for over four years and helped to influence quite a few third party raw tools (we also published the first books on RAW processing worldwide). We fully support OpenRAW because this initiative is driven by photographers (including ourselves) who are worried about the long term archiving of their RAW files and improved image quality from raw converters. We want to thank Juergen Specht to get this initiative out of the ground (we know Juergen now for over 5 years from his legendary D1 mailing list).

4/23/2005 DOP Logo Contest

When we started Digital Outback Photo we created the above simple logo. Now it is time for a new one. We are sure that we have many talented designers among our readers. We offer the winner of this contest the e-books DOP2000/DOP2101 and the filters DOPF001/002 and also all new e-books and DOPF (our own design) in 2005 for free. Here are some things to think about:

  • Different sizes possible (height 52, 46, 20 pixels)
  • Can be changed to different color scheme for logos like:
  • The master logo needs to be in Photshop PSD format
  • You grant Digital Outback Photo the unrestricted use rights

The contest ends when we have found a new logo (we then will announce the winner). We hope you have some fun. Send the logo submission to: uwe@outbackphoto.com

4/19/2005 Nikon D2X white balance encryption

We know from different sources that the WB information for the Nikon D2X is encrypted. It seems that Nikon wants to make the life of 3rd party raw converter developers more complicated.

Here is our take:

  • The D2X is an extremely competitive high end camera. Why does Nikon not support all its users to get the best out of these wonderful machines?
  • We think we users own the data of our images (this includes the WB information).

We hope Nikon will soon disclose the WB settings and help its customer to gain the best from their D2X.

Actually many other manufaturers are also not disclosing their RAW formats. Nikon just made it more complicated than most of the others.
